The world is changing. Resources are running out and the climate is warming. The Netherlands is choosing new energy sources to protect nature for future generations.

Global warming

The Earth is changing faster than ever. Scientists have warned for decades that greenhouse gas emissions are gradually warming the climate. In 2026, the consequences are visible everywhere: drier summers, wetter winters and rising sea levels that threaten coastlines.

For a low-lying country such as the Netherlands, this is an urgent topic. Protection of nature and the development of sustainable solutions go hand in hand. The Dutch government has committed to the Climate Agreement and aims for a 55% reduction in CO₂ by 2030 compared to 1990. This requires joint effort by citizens, organisations and government.

The role of the Netherlands in green energy

The Netherlands is investing heavily in renewable energy sources. Solar parks are covering more and more roofs and open fields, while offshore wind turbines provide stable electricity. Dutch energy companies work together with municipalities to make neighbourhoods gas-free.

Hydrogen is being studied as a clean fuel for heavy industry and transport. The development of smart grids makes it possible to better balance supply and demand. This transition creates new jobs in engineering, installation and maintenance. Protecting the environment and strengthening society go hand in hand.

The future of agriculture

Agriculture 5.0 stands for the combination of traditional knowledge and modern technology. Dutch farmers experiment with precision agriculture, where sensors and data help to apply water, fertiliser and crop protection accurately. Vertical greenhouses produce vegetables using less space and less water.

Robots support harvest and monitoring. This development reduces environmental impact and provides healthier food. Protection of soil and biodiversity takes priority. The future of agriculture lies in cooperation between science, farmers and consumers. This is how the Netherlands builds a resilient food system for coming generations.
